Corvette Racing Prepares For Saturday’s 24 Hours Of Le Mans

It’s that time of a year again—a holiday for racing fans. The 24 Hours of Le Mans and Corvette Racing is embracing the challenge. Since 2001, Corvette Racing has emerged victorious in the GTE Pro class seven times, going for eighth this Saturday and Sunday June 22-23.

Posting the best time for the team was Jan Magnussen in the No. 73 Corvette at 3:59.491 (127.3 mph) to rank fifth in the GTE Pro class. It might seem sub-par, but the top six cars were all within a second of each other — signifying unprecedented depth in the competition for what is expected to be the last Le Mans race for the Corvette C6.R race cars, before the C7.R is expected to replace it next season.

Paired with Magnussen in the No. 73 car will be American Le Mans Series teammate Antonio Garcia, along with Jordan Taylor, who additionally races a Corvette Daytona Prototype in the Rolex Grand Am Series. In the No. 74 Corvette C6.R, defending ALMS GT champions Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner team with Richard Westbrook — who already proved a winning combination after taking first in the GT class during this year’s 12 Hours of Sebring.

Here’s where to watch:

2014 Camaro Z/28 To Feature Largest Front Tires Of Any Production Car On The Market

The 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is looking like the most extreme track-oriented vehicle GM has ever announced, thanks to a bare-bones approach inside and out, coupled with some really incredible hardware, with no one feature being the main highlight, but rather complimentary to the rest. Sure, everyone recognizes the all-motor 7.0L LS7 V8 engine, which is arguably the best performance engine Chevrolet has ever offered. But there’s also the 60-tread count Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires.

These marvels of rubber are street-legal slicks, essentially. And as a fun fact, they’re built in the same facility where Pirelli manufactures its Formula 1 racing tires. More impressively, the Trofeo R tires designated for the Camaro Z/28 measure 305/30ZR-19 in all four corners. Enormous. So big, in fact, that Chevy claims the size to be the largest front-mounted tire of any production car on the market.

For reference, the Bugatti Veyron sports 265-size tires in the front. The enhanced size of the contact patch, along with a 20-percent stiffer spring rate over the Camaro 1LE and purpose-built DSSV shocks unique to the Z/28, are said to give the LS7-powered road-course killer the cornering abilities of 1.05 G forces. That’s better than most supercars, and completely unheard of for what many relate to as a muscle car.

Maintenance Tip Monday

Don’t wait until the last minute to fill up your tank on the road! Waiting until the gas needle gets close to EMPTY or the gas light goes not only puts you at risk of being stranded on the side of the road, but it can cause potential damage to your car. Running your car on very little fuel can pull sediment from the bottom of the fuel tank into the rest of the car's system. This can clog the fuel pump, fuel injectors or fuel filter. The fuel pump is electric and the sediment could also cause your car to overheat, costing you about $500 in repairs, which is definitely not something most of us want to spend money on, especially during vacation!

To prevent this from happening, re-fuel before your car is below a quarter tank and definitely before the gaslight goes on!
